5 Tips for a Sustainable Halloween

What’s the scariest part of Halloween? The amount of waste it generates! Read on for 5 easy tips for a more sustainable Halloween.

1. reuse, thrift, borrow, or make your own costume

Unfortunately, many costumes are purchased for a single night of use, and often end up in the landfill once disposed. To minimize your costume’s environmental impact, consider these options for a more sustainable Halloween:

Reuse or borrow a costume

The most sustainable Halloween costume? The one in your closet already! Wearing a costume from a previous year is easier on the environment and your wallet, plus, you’ll know it fits well! Swap with a friend if you want to wear something new, or exchange your kids’ costumes with other parents.

Make Your Own Costume

Store-bought costumes are often made from uncomfortable, synthetic materials that are either too hot or too cold for the weather. What could be more comfortable than wearing your own closet?

Look in your closet for staples that easily convert into a costume, with little or no purchase necessary. Think Black Cat, Ballerina, Lumberjack, Risky Business, etc.! There are LOTS of ideas online for this, just make sure you know what you’ll do with the costume pieces after Halloween: can they be repurposed, reused again, or recycled?

Grainy photo, but here we’re a lumberjack and maple tree–an easy costume that we made out of clothes and supplies we already had at home. Plus, we had fun making it together! We saved the leaf decorations and recycled the cardboard box that made the tree when Halloween was over.

Buy a Costume

Thrift stores such as Goodwill are a great place to find items that complement a homemade costume.

If you must buy new, my suggestion is to buy something “classic,” that you know you’ll want to wear in future years.

For kids, I’d suggest buying a costume that you know they’ll wear year-round! Many kids like to dress up outside of Halloween, and this way, their costume can do double duty. If your child has younger siblings, hold onto their costume for next year, and it might get some reuse that way as well.

2. buy healthier candy

Traditional candy brands may be tasty, but their ingredients are kinda junky. Look at the label closely, and you’ll probably find palm oil (not a sustainable option unless it’s RSPO Certified Sustainable), refined sugars, corn oil, fillers, gums, flavors, and artificial coloring. Unreal makes some better-for-you and amazing-tasting replacements for some common candy favorites, like these, which are similar to Snickers. The bags are definitely smaller than bulk bags of traditional candy, and they can be pricy. Consider adding some of these to your mix.

3. recycle your candy wrappers with terracycle

Single serving candy inherently produces more waste than bulk snacks. But in the interest of safety, you can’t avoid this entirely if you want to hand out candy or go Trick-or-Treating on Halloween. My suggestion is to limit what you purchase and consume, and to recycle the wrappers with Terracycle!

The reason these wrappers aren’t recyclable via store drop off or curbside bins is that they’re typically multi-layer, that is, a layer of plastic and aluminum foil. Terracycle can pull these layers apart and effectively recycle them. To make an impact beyond Halloween night, try the Kitchen Separation Box, which not only accepts snack wrappers, but also accepts many other common household items that you otherwise can’t recycle.

4. avoid disposable decorations and reuse the ones you have

Like costumes, Halloween decorations tend to be plastic-based, and often single use. Instead of purchasing disposable, plastic decorations (like spider webs or gel clings), consider reusable, or organic decorations. Think pumpkins and gourds (just compost them, see #5!), cut out paper bats or stars, or reuse string lights. Did you buy a pumpkin carving kit? Make sure you save it for next year, too!

5. compost your pumpkin and roast the seeds!

We carved mini pumpkins last year and they turned out so cute!! They were much easier to carve, and had all the same spooky, flickering magic.

Bodhi wanted to eat the pumpkin right away, but you might want to cook or roast it first. 😉

When you’re carving, don’t forget to compost the innards, or roast the seeds! This recipe from Minimalist Baker shows you how. Once your pumpkin starts to decompose, put it in your compost bin (so long as it isn’t painted, glittered, etc.), or compost it in your backyard. So it can “come back to life” next year!

Have a safe, spooky, and sustainable Halloween!

10 Random Things I’m Loving: Fall Favorites

Now a few days into October, there’s no denying it: it’s Autumn. I’m excited for all my fall favorites: Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Fall sunsets, Spooky Season, and my birthday. Today on the blog, 10 Random Things I’m Loving: Fall Edition. Dive into pumpkin spice, apples, and all things cozy– with a sustainable edge, of course!

1. Purely Elizabeth pumpkin cinnamon Ancient grain granola

PSL fans, this is for you. This Pumpkin Cinnamon granola is seriously addicting, and packed with healthy ingredients! Purely Elizabeth is my favorite granola– I love every flavor! Unlike other seasonal treats, you won’t find any artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, or other junk in this. Blueberry Hemp is another favorite I’m loving right now.

2. Jennifer Behr Padded Headbands

The padded headband is back, and Jennifer Behr makes the chicest styles and colors– sustainably. Every piece is handmade in Brooklyn, where the workers are paid a living wage, and their obsolete inventory at the end of the year fits “in one shoebox.” Made of premium silks, satins, velvets, and crystals, these accessories will last decades. I got the Kate headband in Cappuccino, and it’s lightweight, silky perfection. I also love this Tori headband in Forest velvet, looking ahead to the holidays. If you’re not ready for a bigger headband, try the slimmer profile Tiana headband, and see how quickly it becomes one of your fall favorites, too.

3. vitamin a swim Playa Linen Boyfriend Shirt

Catch me wearing the Playa Linen Shirt on any given day–it’s perfect for layering and adding sun protection without being too hot! This cinnamon shade is called Desert, which is perfect for Fall. You can also buy it in a set with matching linen shorts.

4. Vuori boyfriend jogger

Fall is the season of everything boyfriend-sized, from jeans to shirts to joggers. Vuori is famous for their joggers, but did you know they’re also a Climate Neutral Certified Brand? As a V1 Community member, Vuori is my go-to for activewear and loungewear. These Boyfriend Joggers are soft and cozy enough for errands, WFH, or lounging on the weekend, and they’re the perfect weight for transitional weather, making them one of my fall favorites and also a year round staple! #therisetheshine

5. Only murders in the building on hulu

Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin are hilarious in this series! And it always seems to take place in Autumn in New York City, which really makes me want to plan a trip! Oh and Selena’s character is always wearing the most stylish and cozy cashmere sweaters. Season 3 centers around Oliver’s play-turned-musical, which made it extra fun for my inner theatre kid.

6. Spiced apple cider spindrift

I looove this seasonal flavor! Spindrift is my favorite sparkling water because it’s just fruit, no funky “flavors” added. This Spiced Apple Cider flavor is crisp, refreshing, and perfectly Fall.

Like the cheese balls of the 90s, but real food. Made with real cheddar and heirloom corn (seeds that have been around at least 100 years, grown sustainably, and never genetically modified), they’re a delicious snack that doesn’t last long in our house. Use them in a Halloween-themed charcuterie board, or eat them straight from the bag, like I do.

8. Dae Hibiscus Wave Spray

This wave spray is hydrating, smells amazing, and makes soft waves! As a brand, DAE is Leaping Bunny certified and donates a portion of purchases to charities bringing clean water to developing nations.

9. Ed Sheeran’s Autumn Variations album

We recently saw Ed Sheeran in concert at SoFi Stadium and it was truly an amazing show! There are no pre-recorded tracks– he makes all beats and harmonies on the spot using a Loop Pedal. It was really impressive! He recently released a new album “Autumn Variations” which I’m excited to listen through! But he’s not my favorite ginger…(see number 10!).

1o. Pumpkin Spice Golden Retriever

Bodhi is our Golden Retriever and he’s very much a red-golden, so we affectionately call him our Pumpkin Spice Golden. I’m enjoying walks with him in the cool Autumn air!

That’s all for now, I hope you’re enjoying the changing seasons wherever you’re located!

Fourth of July Style

Beach or pool, lake or backyard BBQ, these are the sustainable essentials for your Fourth of July celebration.

Dive in!

BUT FIRST, SUNSCREEN

Wherever you’re headed for the Fourth of July, make sure you’re covered with sustainable, clean sunscreen! Check out my blog post here

While you’re at it, you may need bug spray. I bought this one from Stem  but haven’t tried it yet (we don’t have many mosquitoes here!). It’s safe for kids and pets and I like its natural oils. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, make sure to test a small portion of skin first to see how you react.

Grab some aloe in case you find yourself with a sunburn on the Fourth of July. I like the ingredients on this one from Badger. I like the brand’s sunscreen,  but haven’t tried this yet!

Ok now on to the fun stuff!

The Best Clean and Eco-Friendly Natural Deodorants

My Sustainable Swaps Series helps you change one thing to make a meaningful impact on your environmental footprint. A great place to start is reconsidering items you use every single day. Deodorant is a staple of modern hygiene, but its impact on people and planet stinks. These natural, eco-friendly deodorants actually work, and come in recyclable, reusable, or compostable packaging.

why you should switch to an eco-friendly deodorant

Traditional deodorants rely on aluminum to block up sweat glands and stop your sweat from reaching the surface of your skin. They often come with other ingredients like phthalates and parabens, and are packaged in single-use, non-recyclable plastic.

The deodorant industry produces 15 million pounds of plastic waste each year. While the scientific evidence linking aluminum and parabens to cancer or other health risks is debatable, my personal philosophy is to choose products that have smaller, natural ingredients lists. Since so much of our chemical exposure cannot be controlled, I try to limit my exposure wherever I can.

Fortunately, there are many alternatives to aluminum-based, plastic-packaged deodorant on the market today, and trying them is easy. I’ve tested quite a few: relaxing at home, dancing at weddings, and completing sweaty workouts. These are the best natural, eco-friendly deodorant options. Freshen up and green your routine with one of these!

Compostable deodorant tubes

These natural deodorants come packaged in compostable tubes, and they’re available on Amazon or at Target, so they’re easy to add to your next order!

Native: Coconut & Vanilla

This deodorant smells great and goes on sooo smoothly from the coconut oil it contains! This type does contain baking soda, but it doesn’t bother me. Some other brands with baking soda formulations have irritated my skin, but for whatever reason, this one does not!

Native Plastic-Free Deodorant holds up to hot runs, daily life, and any other time you sweat. The tube is made from paperboard sourced from responsibly managed forests. Plus it’s free from Parabens, Sulfates, Phthalates, and Aluminum.

Raw Sugar: Vanilla bean + Charcoal

Another good option? Raw Sugar Vanilla Bean + Charcoal. This deodorant smells yummy and comes in a combination of a biodegradable paper tube with recycled plastic parts. It used to be available in 100% biodegradable packaging; if you see it, get it ! It’s also free of aluminum, baking soda, talc, parabens, and propylene glycol.

It can take some time to adjust to a new deodorant, so don’t be discouraged! It can take up to two weeks to transition, but most people adjust and are able to use a natural deodorant immediately, with no need for any special detoxing.

refillable deodorant

Meow Meow Tweet

Quirky name, excellent deodorant. I like the Baking Soda-Free Grapefruit scent. Its light scent is gender neutral, it applies easily, and keeps you smelling fresh. It comes in a small glass jar, so just use a clean finger to scoop out a pea-sized amount for each underarm. It will warm up and melt into your skin.

With Meow Meow Tweet’s bulk refill program, you can purchase a large glass jar of deodorant and use it to refill the small glass jar that you’ll keep your daily product in. When the large jar is empty, send it back for free to Meow Meow Tweet. They’ll sanitize and reuse it as part of their closed loop, 100% waste free bulk refill program. When your small jar is empty, just clean it out with hot water and mild dish soap, to remove any old product before you refill it with fresh product. Super easy and sustainable.

Meow Meow Tweet products can be ordered online with a subscription service so you receive new deodorant every few months and never run out. Their product ships in small boxes filled with corn starch packing peanuts–just run them under hot water and watch them melt away! Meow Meow Tweet has an entire range of sustainable and bulk product options that I’d love to try!

I also love how it’s vegan, made with organic ingredients, and they give back to diverse organizations promoting Earth & Nature, Social Justice, and Animal Justice. Learn more about their values here.

Making the Switch to  eco-friendly deodorant

It can take up to two weeks to adjust to the new deodorant, because that’s how long it can take for your body to purge the aluminum and other chemicals from your last deodorant. I’ve typically noticed a few days of transition, but was able to adjust very quickly to the deodorants on this list. If you have a big event coming up, try to switch more than two weeks in advance, or wait until afterwards to see how your body responds.

Whether you’re trying a natural deodorant for the first time, or switching to one with more sustainable packaging, congrats! You can feel good about making a Sustainable Swap that’s better for people and planet.

What’s your favorite natural deodorant?  Drop me a line in the comments below.

Dive into the Best Snorkeling Sites on Maui

Maui, Hawaii, "The valley isle"

When I travel, island adventures are at the top of my list. One of my favorite ocean activities is snorkeling (and free diving!). I’ve been fortunate to travel to islands with some of the best snorkeling in the world, and I want to share them with you. Today’s post is all about the best snorkeling sites on Maui, and what you can do to protect these stunning ecosystems.

 Let’s dive in.

Lana'i, as viewed from Kā‘anapali, Maui

MAUI NUI

Known as “The Valley Isle,” and the second largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, Maui is a popular destination for sun-seekers and honeymooners, and it’s not hard to see why. With warm sun, cool breezes, and stunning ocean blues, this Hawaiian island is nothing short of enchanting. “Maui Nui,” or “Greater Maui,” actually refers to four islands that were once joined over a million years ago. These are Maui, Moloka’i, Lana’i, and Kaho’olawe. Formed from seven shield volcanoes, as sea levels rose, spaces between these volcanoes flooded to form the distinct islands we see today. Each of these islands is unique: Lana’i is known for its exclusive luxury, Maui for its wide variety of tourist attractions and gorgeous resorts, and Moloka’i for having the highest sea cliffs in the world. Kaho’olawe, the smallest of the four, is used only for native Hawaiian cultural purposes today. When staying on Maui, you can access Lana’i and Moloka’i through helicopter tours and even some snorkeling tours. The snorkeling sites below are all accessed from the island of Maui.

Black Rock as seen from Kā‘anapali Beach

Pu’u keka’a (BLACK ROCK)

No need to charter a tour; to snorkel Maui’s Pu’u Keka’a, also known as Black Rock, you can wade into the water from Kā‘anapali Beach. All you need is your snorkel gear, but beware of strong currents. Wear a life vest for safety, swim with a buddy, and exit the water before you start to feel tired. The ocean currents can be strong and unpredictable, pushing you into the sharp rocks, or pulling you out to sea. If you aren’t a strong swimmer, you may want to consider enjoying Black Rock from the golden sand beach. Here you can witness many people jumping from the rocks into the ocean. This is in tribute to the ancient Hawaiian practice of cliff diving. Pu’u Keka’a is believed to be a jumping off point where the souls of the dead enter the afterlife. Again use caution; cliff diving can be extremely dangerous. With its proximity to the many resorts in Ka’anapali, Black Rock is an iconic spot and one of the best snorkeling sites on Maui. It’s a must for your next trip!
Approaching Molokini Crater by Boat
Exploring the Reef Inside Molokini Crater

molokini crater

Perhaps even more iconic is Molokini Crater. It’s actually not a crater, but a crescent atoll, the remnants of lava-buildup from underwater volcanic eruptions that have eroded to form a ring-shaped island. Take a chartered snorkeling tour and enjoy the catamaran ride out into the ocean, watching as Molokini grows larger, looming out of the blue Pacific Ocean. We’ve toured with Sail Trilogy twice and loved both experiences from start to finish! The inside reef boasts spectacularly clear water for snorkeling, while the backside drops down to nearly 360 feet,  offering wall and drift dives for SCUBA divers. Hop off the boat and into the salty, chilly, clear blue waters, where you’ll see an abundance of fish and coral. Opt for an early morning tour to avoid some crowds.

honolua bay

Meaning “two bays,” Honolua Bay is a beautiful snorkeling destination in the summer, and a big wave surfing site in the winter. Its beautiful coral formations and abundance of fish make it an exciting destination, and one of the best snorkeling sites on Maui. It’s also great for free diving! Dive deep to peek under the coral shelves and you might spot turtles, eels, and crabs, and you’re sure to spot colorful fish. The Hawaiian sun may be hot, but the Pacific Ocean is still cool. On future free dives, I’ll be wearing a shortie spring wetsuit so I can explore longer before feeling cold. But if you know me, you know I’m cold everywhere. Most snorkelers wear bikinis or board shorts, with some wearing long-sleeve UPF shirts.
Mokulei'a Bay above the surface. Peep the partial Hawaiian rainbow!
Below the surface, a Honu swims peacefully.

mokulei’a bay/slaughterhouse

Adjacent to Honolulu is Mokulei’a Bay, another spectacular site for snorkeling. Our catamaran took us to each site, one after the other, which is a great way to see both bays without attempting to climb down onto a rocky beach or swimming from one to the other (running the risk of exhaustion from strong ocean currents). You just might get lucky and see some locals, like these Honu (Sea Turtles). At one point, I saw 3 turtles in close proximity to the coral shelf, eating and swimming. They are truly peaceful to watch! Remember to respect the wildlife and their home. Give them space, don’t touch them, and don’t take any coral, shells, rocks, etc. with you.

REEF SAFETY

Reef-safe Sunscreen

It’s no secret that traditional, chemical-based sunscreens seriously damage coral reefs. Many protected marine sanctuaries and some states like Hawaii have banned ingredients like oxtinoxate and oxybenzone. To make sure you’re using a reef-safe sunscreen that’s also effective, check out my blog post on Clean Sunscreen here.  My favorite sport sunscreen is All Good Mineral Sport Sunscreen, which is a great option for face and body. It blends in easily and stays put. For water sports like snorkeling, I use All Good Sunscreen Butter on my face. It has SPF 50+ for extra coverage. Warm some in your hand before applying, and a little goes a long way. Remember that zinc sunscreen will “melt” in after applying for a more even look. I’ve worn All Good Sunscreen for snorkeling, running, surfing, you name it. Like any sunscreen, make sure you reapply per the instructions, which for this formula is every 80 minutes and after swimming or toweling off.

take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints

To protect these beautiful ecosystems, it’s so important that you follow all crew member and posted instructions. The guideline “take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints” sums it up best. Don’t touch the coral reefs or other sea life, don’t take anything from reef back with you, and be sure not to leave any trash or debris. Be extra careful when swimming close to shallow reefs; your flippers can easily brush into and damage the fragile reef. Coral reefs grow extremely slowly, so taking or bumping into a small section can turn the clock back on decades of growth. To preserve these stunning environments for future generations to enjoy, respect and protect the reefs!

Biohacking Women’s Health

Biohacking Women’s Health

Happy Women’s History Month! Today’s post covers all the apps, devices, and tests for biohacking women’s health. From hormone-free birth control, to tracking your fertility– not just your period– there’s an app for that, and I’ve tested them for you. Let’s dive in.

 Biohacking your cycle

Natural Cycles app

I’ve been using Natural Cycles since 2019,  when I wanted a more natural alternative to hormonal birth control. What I love most about it is that it puts me in control of my body and my health. I’m not vilifying hormonal birth control or medicine–sometimes they’re genuinely needed!– but I love that this app allows me to own my reproductive health naturally. And because I’m not taking medicine, I can see what’s actually going on with my cycle each month.

What is Natural Cycles?

Natural Cycles is a digital birth control app that is FDA cleared for use as birth control. This puts it in a league of its own: no period tracker app can say the same. That’s just one thing that makes Natural Cycles different from any period tracker you’ve been using. It also predicts and confirms your ovulation, helps you track PMS symptoms and onset, and even has a “partner mode” where you can allow your partner access to your daily fertility status. It can be used either to prevent or to plan and monitor a pregnancy.

How Natural Cycles Works

Our body temperatures rise or fall with different hormone levels, and a temperature spike shortly follows ovulation. Natural Cycles tracks your temperature throughout your cycle, and predicts your “fertile window,” during which ovulation may occur, to help you plan for pregnancy, or avoid conception. Natural Cycles is 98% effective at preventing pregnancy with perfect use, and 93% effective with typical use. That’s the same as “typical use” with the pill. For extra convenience, pair Natural Cycles with the Oura Ring and let it measure and sync the data for you. Without the Oura Ring, you’ll use a thermometer provided by Natural Cycles to take your temperature orally, first thing in the morning. The app has a subscription fee, but this ensures your data is never sold to third parties. Use the link below for 25% off!

*Everyone’s medical situation is unique; check with your doctor before stopping/starting/changing any medications.*

Modern Fertility Hormone Test and APP

Speaking of hormones, Modern Fertility,  part of Ro, offers a range of tests to measure and track your key fertility hormones to better understand your fertility. Depending on whether or not you’re taking hormonal birth control, you can test 6 hormones, from the comfort of your home. With the Modern Fertility Hormone Test, you’ll test and learn about AMH, TSH, FSH, E2, fT4, and LH, to get a clearer picture of the amount of eggs you may have remaining, whether your hormones are acting as expected each month for successful ovulation, and more insights tailored to you. The Hormone Test requires a blood sample, and you’ll need to take it on a specific day of your cycle, but it’s very easy to do at home with a simple finger stick. Be sure to watch their how-to video first!

proov HORMONE TEST AND APP

Looking for a cycle-by-cycle picture of your hormone levels? Proov Test offers at-home test options to test FSH, LH, and PdG, as well as hCG to confirm pregnancy, and sperm tests for a partner. All of these are tested without a blood draw, and the Proov app makes it easy to interpret the results by reading the colored test lines for you. In addition, the app gives you a “score,” for your hormones, along with suggestions for how to support your hormones throughout your cycle. The Proov app will prompt you when to test, and tracks your hormone levels across multiple cycles so you can identify trends. Interested? Use this link and code “mermade20” for 20% off.

Quick tip: use a reusable shot glass to collect your sample, or compostable cups from Amazon.

To avoid plastic waste, skip plastic cups and use a reusable shot glass to collect your sample. (How cute is this little cup Proov sent me?!).

If you want to avoid glass in the bathroom like me (I’m very prone to breaking things), try these compostable cups instead.

 Biohacking overall health

Oura Ring

Providing a wealth of biomarkers at your fingertip, the Oura Ring is my favorite biohacking wearable, hands down….The Oura Ring has been a total game changer for me in how I understand my sleep and how I plan my workouts to optimize my athletic performance. In fact, I wrote an entire blog post on my Oura Ring. While it may seem pricy at first blush, it more than pays for itself when you consider the amount of high-quality data you get, and the ability to analyze this overtime. If you’ve ever wanted to improve your sleep, buy an Oura Ring now and thank me later.

Looking for more? For tips on how to make your period eco-friendly, check out this post on menstrual cups, and see why they might be the best sustainable swap you could ever make! I recommend starting with the brand Saalt. My favorites are below.

Choose a Menstrual Cup for a Better Period

Switching to a menstrual cup is probably the best Sustainable Swap I’ve made to date. In addition to being eco-friendly, it makes my period easier. Reusable menstrual cups and discs offer a more sustainable, more hygienic, more affordable, more convenient, and more comfortable alternative to the costly chemicals and single-use plastics of traditional menstrual products. Simply put: my menstrual cup is a win-win for me and the planet. What’s more sustainable than that?  Let’s dive in.

Menstrual Cups for a cleaner period, period.

Reasons You’ll Love Menstrual Cups (Besides Sustainability!)

Wearing a menstrual cup is almost like not even having a period. They don’t need to be changed as frequently as pads or tampons. Menstrual cups collect your flow and hold it away from your body, so there’s no risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome*, and you won’t get dried out. You can even wear it overnight without worry.

Wearing a menstrual cup is almost like not even having a period.

Between changing the cup once in the morning and at night, you can swim, do yoga, or take a long plane ride without the need to change it or check for leaks. The cup won’t absorb liquid from a  pool, ocean, or lake like tampon strings do (gross). They’re comfortable and you can’t even feel them, unlike pads or tampons! So you can live your life without worrying about your period. Menstrual cups are simply awesome; I’ll never go back to tampons!

*Follow all product safety guidelines listed on the packaging!

My Favorite Menstrual Cup Brands

Unsurprisingly, one size/type/brand may not fit all, and you may need to try a cup or two to find your favorite one. I recommend starting with Saalt. They come in various combinations of size, softness, and lots of colors! Saalt has a quiz to help you pick the best one for you. Their cup wash is good for cleaning your cup between uses, but make sure to boil your cup between cycles.

Organicup also has good options. Their cup wipes are handy for on-the-go; just wash your hands well, too.

you deserve a chemical-free period

Chemicals in Your Tampons

The nonprofit Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE) funded research analyzing chemicals in tampons. Test results included known reproductive toxins like toluene, xylene, and methylene chloride. WVE cites previous studies that have found “pesticide residue, parabens, and phthalates linked to hormone disruption, antibacterial chemicals like triclosan, and various carcinogens including styrene and chloroform.” Yuck!

It’s Not on the Label

But there is little FDA regulation of tampons, and they don’t require a full ingredients label. More transparency is needed as to what the tampons are made of, what chemicals they contain, and the risks they pose. Menstrual cups are made from medical grade silicone, a known, safe compound, so you can bypass the ingredients and label concerns of tampons by switching to a cup!

Prefer Tampons and Pads? Try These Brands.

Still prefer pads and tampons? Look for a brand that is transparent about their ingredients, uses 100% cotton in the tampon, and biodegradable materials, such as Oi Organic Initiative. Other options would be Rael or Cora.

Quick tip: keep some sustainable pads, tampons, and liners on hand as backup options.

YOUR PERIOD has a FOOTPRINT

How do period products affect the environment? A Global Citizen article states that a menstruating person uses “between 5,000 and 15,000 pads and tampons and is expected to throw away roughly 400 pounds of period product packaging.” That’s a lot of trash. The article continues that, “in the US, around 12 billion pads and 7 billion tampons are thrown out every year….Tampons, pads, and panty liners, their packaging, and wrapping generate more than 200,000 metric tons of waste annually.” This material doesn’t decompose quickly– it takes 500 to 800 years for plastic and non-compostable materials. These numbers are staggering, and hard to fathom.

In the US, period products and their packaging generate 200,000 metric tons of waste annually. Plastic and non-compostable materials can take 500-800 years to decompose.

Alternatively, one Saalt menstrual cup can be used for up to 10 years.

go with the flow

If their comfort, convenience, safety, hygiene, and sustainability haven’t convinced you to try menstrual cups yet, JUST DO IT. If you’re nervous, that’s ok. You were probably nervous about using a tampon for the first time, too. If you prefer pads to tampons, try period underwear, which is washable. My next adventure will be trying a menstrual disc from Saalt.

Good luck in whatever you choose; it may take some time to go with the new “flow.” 😉  For more easy, eco-friendly tips, check out my Sustainable Swaps series

Happy swapping!

How to Choose a Clean Sunscreen for Summer 2024

Choosing clean skincare is one way to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Using a clean sunscreen is a great place to start, since we use it daily, our skin is highly absorbent, and it washes off into the ocean eventually. So, it’s important to pick a sunscreen that really is clean for you and the planet. Sunscreens help protect us from skin cancer, so it’s important to make sure that what you’re using is both effective and wearable. Every choice we make has an impact on the planet, so it’s wise to make conscious tradeoffs that make sense for you. In this blog post, I share my holistic approach to sun safety, and the clean sunscreen products I’ve tested and passed. Let’s dive in.

What “Reef-Safe” Sunscreen Really Means

In searching for a clean sunscreen,  it’s important to avoid “greenwashing,” a tactic some companies use that applies non-regulated labels like “clean” to their products to make them appear better than they are. You’ve probably heard of reef-safe sunscreen, but what does that mean? The “reef-safe” label usually means that the sunscreen is oxybenzone- and paraben-free, but there is growing evidence that octinoxate, octocrylene, homosalate, octisalate, and avobenzone are not safe for the planet or people, either. I’ve seen “reef-safe” sunscreens that contain these chemicals, so be sure to check the ingredients before you buy. My sunscreen “winners” do not have these ingredients.

My 5 Rules for Clean Sunscreen

The sunscreens with the harshest chemicals are traditionally “best” at blocking the sun’s rays, but that comes with a personal and environmental cost. So as part of my clean skincare routine,  I’ve opted for clean sunscreen products with minerals as physical blockers to the sun’s rays instead of chemical blockers. I’ve tested many to find the best ones that withstand water sports, sweating, and daily life. I typically have two groups of sunscreens I use for specific areas of my life: Waterproof, for sports and outdoor activities, and Daily for everyday use, suitable to wear to work, to a wedding, under makeup, etc. I’ve tested dozens of sunscreens in search of the best, and these are the rules I use to assess them.

My Rules for Clean Sunscreen

Any sunscreen I wear must be:

  1. Non-nano, non-coated zinc oxide
  2. Remaining ingredients are “clean”
  3. Waterproof
  4. Something I’ll actually wear
  5. Effective

Clean & Green Mineral Sunscreens

How I Assess Clean Sunscreen Ingredients

Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a great resource to check product ingredients that I use all the time! It has helped me find many of the sunscreens which made it onto this list. With the available research on efficacy and safety, I only use sunscreen that is mineral-based: non-nano, non-coated zinc oxide. To me, there’s enough evidence (or lack thereof) to avoid certain ingredients in products I use daily. So, I avoid parabens, phthalates, and other suspected endocrine-disrupters. EWG rates each ingredient in a product by concerns related to allergy, cancer, developmental, and use restrictions. They also state when the data available is limited, so you know when there are gaps.

What it Means for Sunscreen to be Effective

Sunscreen meant for activities where I’m swimming or sweating MUST be waterproof, otherwise it’s effectively useless. This requirement is so important that I verify it with my own use testing (rule #5). But, if it’s not something I’ll wear (because it’s greasy, smells bad, is hard to apply, etc.), then it’s also effectively useless, because I just won’t wear it! I have very sensitive skin, so if it irritates me, it fails rule #4. Similarly, sunscreens that are difficult to apply lose points with me.

Quick tip: moisturize your skin before applying mineral sunscreen for easier absorption!

Lastly, for me to consider a sunscreen “effective” it has to keep me from getting burned or tanned. I look beyond the “SPF 30 UVA/UVB” label.  I start by using EWG’s sunscreen effectiveness rating, or Consumer Reports (but they rate fewer mineral sunscreens, currently). Then, I test the sunscreen myself. The Waterproof ones are easier to assess because I wear them for longer periods of time, under more intense sun conditions where the risk of burning is higher. The Daily sunscreens are more difficult to test, so I rely on the previous ratings, and using other sun protection measures to balance out my risk of sun exposure.

Clean Sunscreen Testing Results

The TL/DR is that All Good Mineral Sport Sunscreen is hands down the best Waterproof, reef-safe, clean sunscreen I’ve ever worn that fits the requirements above. For the Daily category, I have 3 favorites: Supergoop! Mineral Sheer Screen or AO 6000x Elemental Screen, for daily use with no tint, no makeup, and Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint, which is the closest thing to foundation that I ever wear. In a pinch, I also wear the All Good Mineral Sport on my face for everyday wear–it’s really not greasy at all and goes on so smoothly. I did try All Good’s “Face” sunscreen, but didn’t like it as much as the Sport formulation.

My Favorite Clean Sunscreens

waterproof and reef-safe sunscreen

    • All Good Mineral Sport Sunscreen: my fave reef-safe, clean sunscreen for face, body, water sports, and daily use. This spreads well, absorbs nicely, stays on, and actually protects you from the sun! 10/10. This comes in a large size which is good if you have several people needing to use it, or a smaller size perfect for a backpack, beach bag, purse, or car.

Quick tip: keep small bottles of sunscreen in your car, purse, backpack, etc. so you always have some on the go!

        • All Good Sunscreen Butter: higher SPF 50 and spreads well for face! This will turn your face a bit white, so unlike the Sport formulation, which can be worn daily, I’d recommend using the Butter only for water sports. However, I just bought their Tinted Sunscreen Butter and will report back after I’ve tried that on my face. UPDATE: The Tinted Sunscreen Butter is a bit too tan for my skin tone. I have very fair skin, so the tinted version might be a good option for someone with tan or olive skin tone. Linking both here!

Wear All Day Clean Sunscreens

      • Supergoop! Mineral Sheer Screen: this goes on smoothly, has a light feel, and wears well by itself or under makeup. It’s a bit pricey for the size, but for a makeup-free natural finish, it’s a great option.
      • AO 6000x Elemental Screen: High-end skincare and sunscreen all in one? Sign me up! I found this on EWG’s list, and loved it! It contains New Zealand red algae, claimed to be 6000x stronger than Vitamin C. My skin is sensitive to Vitamin C, so it’s a great swap, and makes for a one-step, no makeup morning skincare routine.
      • Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint: Another great 2-in-1 Skincare+Sunscreen option! This is my favorite tinted moisturizer, and it’s packed with squalane, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid. It makes my skin look dewy and hydrated, and my skin feels so soft after wearing it. It comes in a ton of shades and half-shades so you can find your best match. This is great for a minimal makeup look on days where you want some coverage. I don’t ever wear foundation; this is what I wear if I’m doing “makeup” for the day.

Honorable Mention Mineral Sunscreens

Solara Suncare is one of the newer brands I’ve tried lately. I haven’t worn them in all the same situations yet that I’ve worn All Good, but they make honorable mention because of their availability (Target!), and of course they meet the top 3 rules. I didn’t feel that Clean Freak and Time Traveler were *quite* as waterproof as All Good Sport, which makes sense: they’re advertised Water Resistant for 40min instead of All Good’s 80min. These are still great options, so try them out if you’re interested and drop a comment to let me know! Since making this post, they’ve also come out with some exciting sunscreen-as-skincare options that I can’t wait to try.

waterproof and reef-safe sunscreen

      • Solara Suncare Clean Freak: This is slightly harder to spread than the All Good Sport for a Waterproof formula to use on the body.Be sure to shake or knead it before use as well. I would use this as a Daily sunscreen for the body, since its waterproof rating is 40min. This is a great option to slather on before heading out on a walk or to the Farmer’s Market, somewhere you won’t be sweating or swimming but you will be a little active.

Wear All Day Clean Sunscreen

      • Solara Suncare Time Traveler: I found this to be a little heavier feeling than the Supergoop! or AO, or even the All Good Sport for Daily facial use, but it’s a great option for daily facial wear nonetheless. It might be a better option for winter.
      • Solara Suncare Fortune Teller Brightening Sunscreen Serum: This is a new one I can’t wait to try! It features a brightening complex of Vitamin C and adaptogens to illuminate your skin as you wear it.
      • Guardian Angel Super Peptide Sunscreen Milk: This formula is packed with ingredients to prevent and reverse environmental damage. I love when sunscreen doubles as skincare, so I can’t wait to try this formula!

How to  Choose Clean Sunscreen Sprays, Sticks, & Balms

Liquid, butter, cream, lotion, stick, spray. Sunscreens come in lots of formulations. Personally, I don’t like sprays– they contain propellants which can be harmful for the environment–and in normal use, most of the spray goes anywhere but on the skin. Further, if it contains titanium dioxide, this can be harmful if inhaled as airborne particles (per California Prop65 warning), although titanium dioxide in a sunscreen lotion is OK. Since so many people still love sprays, I found a better one for you! Check out Blue Lizard’s Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen Spray: no titanium dioxide, and a “new propellant” that claims to be more eco-friendly. But full disclaimer: I have not tested it personally.

However, I do recommend sunscreen sticks in some situations. A sunscreen stick can be handy because of its small size and no-mess portability. They’re good for a quick touch up on the go–think skiing or trail running–but it’s hard to ensure you completely cover larger areas. Toss the Sunscreen Butter Stick in your pocket or backpack for quick touchups, but don’t rely on it alone.

I haven’t mentioned lip balm, so far. This has been a challenging sunscreen to find. All Good does make one, but it made my lips very white, so I never wore it (it failed rule #4!). Sun Bum goes on smooth, but contains some of the other chemicals I’m avoiding (homosalate, octisalate). I’m still searching for one that meets all criteria above, and will edit this post when I test some more.

Protekt lip balm, updated July 2023

I finally have a lip balm to add to the list! This one comes from Protekt, and it wears well, with clean ingredients! After applying, I recommend using your finger to gently massage it in,  and this helps avoid any white cast.

Beyond Mineral Sunscreen: Throw Some Shade

To further protect yourself and minimize your impact, it’s important to not rely on clean sunscreen alone. Making your own shade will help minimize your sun exposure as well as your skincare usage. What’s the best way to keep your sun safety habits? Make it as easy as possible. Living in SoCal, I’ve embraced the Endless Summer, and that means I always grab a hat, sunglasses, and retouch sunscreen on at least my hands before going outside.

Quick tip: Keep your hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen by the door to grab on your way out. Invest in a hat (or two!) that you love. Make it easy to stay sun safe!

      • Apply SPF 30+ daily to face, neck, hands
      • SPF on the hands must be waterproof
      • Apply waterproof SPF 30+ before exercising outside or going in the water
      • When spending time outside, consider the following:
        • SPF as discussed above
        • Limit the time you’re outside
        • Make your own shade
          • UPF clothing, or really any coverup
          • Umbrella or beach tent
          • Wear a hat
          • Wear large sunglasses

Final Thoughts on How to Choose a Clean Sunscreen

Reef-safe, clean sunscreen can be a vital part of your clean skincare routine. To avoid greenwashing, don’t rely on marketing alone; always verify that ingredients are clean and reef-safe using a trusted source such as EWG. Be wary of promoted products, which are incentivized, can change with trends and promotions, and haven’t necessarily been tested for very long or with any criteria. Lastly, reef-safe, clean sunscreen is only a part of your sustainable lifestyle, and should be used with other sun protection methods such as minimizing sun exposure and wearing a large hat and sunglasses. This holistic approach will help you balance the risk of skin cancer with the risk that harsh chemicals pose to people and planet.

Choose a Safety Razor for a Sustainable Shave

Switching from a traditional razor to a double-edged safety razor is not only sustainable, it’s surprisingly easy. As part of my Sustainable Swaps Series, this post will help you make the Sustainable Swap to a safety razor, changing just one thing to make a big impact on your personal waste footprint. Still not ready to switch to try a safety razor? Read on for a new middle ground razor I’m testing, and for free ways to recycle your single-use razors!

Check out my Sustainable Swaps Series for more easy, Sustainable Swaps!

*UPDATED MARCH 2024 for how to recycle disposable razors and blades.*

but first, recycle your disposable razors and blades–for free!

Whether you switch to a more reusable razor or not, you can make a big impact simply by recycling your disposable razors and blades–for free. If you follow me on Instagram, you probably already know that I love Terracycle. Terracycle takes hard-to-recycle items and breaks them down so that they can be recycled or repurposed. And they have many free programs that make it really easy to participate! The Gillette Recycling Program is a free recycling program through Terracycle that accepts all brands of blades, razors, and plastic packaging. To use this free program, simply create an account with Terracycle, join the program, and start collecting your blades, razors and plastic packaging in an old shipping box. Once full, print your free label and mail it in. That’s it!

WHY YOU SHOULD TRY A SAFETY RAZOR

Summer is here, meaning warmer temps, shorter shorts, and more shaving. Chances are, your current razor is partly or completely disposable. While disposable razors are convenient, the waste they generate really adds up.

An EPA estimate from 1990 stated that the US produced 2 billion throwaway razors and blades annually. This figure has likely grown, since the US razor market hit $2.7 billion in 2021.

If you shave regularly, safety razors present a great opportunity to make a small tweak in your routine for a big impact on your waste.

how to use a safety razor

I started using a double edge safety razor about 5 years ago, and have never looked back. The handle is reusable–you just replace the blade as needed– and the blades themselves are recyclable! They’re also cost-effective: a double-edge safety razor will cost you about $20 on Amazon, and last for years. Mine lasted about 5 years until it fell from the bathroom shelf and snapped. A pack of refill blades will cost about $10 for 50 blades, or 20 cents each.

The safety razor might seem intimidating at first, but just go slowly until you get comfortable, and you will quickly love this razor!

safety razor shaving Tips

Starting with a new razor will feel a bit like it’s your first time shaving again, but with practice, you will get the hang of it in no time.

To make the process as smooth as possible, follow the acronym, LEGS:

  1. Lather and Exfoliate: exfoliate to remove dead skin cells, then lather up with your favorite cream or soap.
  2. Go gently and slowly. The weight of the razor alone is often enough pressure.
  3. Start simply: avoid challenging areas like your ankles or knees until you’ve gotten the hang of using the razor.

With practice, you’ll soon become a pro– just like you did with a disposable razor.

safety razors and blades

There are many options for safety razors on the market. Here are some suggestions.

Recently I stumbled onto the Leaf razor, and I’m excited to try it! If you want to try a reusable razor but want a more traditional, multi-blade style, this might be for you! It comes in lots of appealing colors, and the many rave reviews make it well worth a try.

My current razor is this Vikings Blade razor.  Also on Amazon, I like how this Bambaw razor comes with its own stand, and it comes in lots of colors, too.

I use Shark razor blades, but you may like to tray this sampler pack of blades to find your favorite!

To lather and moisturize before shaving, you can use your favorite soap, or a cream like this one from Eos. They have a partnership with Terracycle; you can send in the product for free recycling

Traveling with a safety razor

When traveling with a safety razor, be advised that TSA will not allow the blades in a carryon bag, but they are allowed in checked luggage.

recycling your blades

When you’ve used a blade, it can be recyled (yay!) but not in your curbside bin. If your city doesn’t offer stainless steel recycling services, search for a manufacturer in your area that works with scrap metal; chances are they can take the blades and process them, along with any other scrap metal you may have around the house.

As you’re collecting used blades to be recycled, store them in a safe, secure location so that children, pets, and other family members can’t be accidentally hurt by them. I keep mine in either old medicine bottles with locking lids, or in an old salt and pepper container, stored out of reach.

smooth sailing

If you’re trying a safety razor for the first time, congrats! You can feel good about making a Sustainable Swap that reduces waste.

Go slowly, and experiment: if you don’t like a certain blade, try another brand. Find what works for your hair type, thickness, and preferences.

Have you ever used a safety razor before? Do you have tips you’d like to add? A favorite brand? Drop me a line in the comments below.
