The Ultimate Hawaiian Islands Packing Guide: 10 Essentials for Your Tropical Travels

We’re heading back to Hawaii this December, and I’ve started packing early (for once!). Here’s my essential, tropical packing list for effortless travel to Hawaii, or any other tropical destination!

If you’re spending the holidays somewhere tropical, lucky you! While I’m not exactly a minimalist packer and will be checking a bag, I’m also not going to recommend buying a gadget or outfit for every scenario. That said, this is not a comprehensive packing list, but rather, a packing list of the essentials that matter most. These are my essentials for a thoughtful, sustainable, and effortless tropical vacation. Here’s what to pack for your next tropical vacation!

 Dive in!

Pack the Essentials, Leave the Rest

I consider “essentials” to be the items that help me travel better, keep me feeling good, or are difficult to buy on vacation. Since it’s rarely possible or practical to bring everything from home, I also leave some room in the budget for purchasing items while on vacation.

These are the tropical travel essentials we’ll be packing for Hawaii.

Tropical Packing List: Sunscreen & Sun Protection

Of course a hallmark of a tropical vacation is (hopefully) the abundant sunshine and warm weather! Even in the winter, tropical climates close to the equator will have intense sun. Skip the suntan and instead choose to protect your skin from the sun’s rays. At the top of my tropical packing list are these essentials; they’ll help keep your skin healthy and radiant for years to come!

1. Clean Sunscreen

If you’ve read my post about Choosing a Clean Sunscreen, you know that wear it constantly, and that I’m picky. So, I always pack plenty of my favorite reef-safe sunscreen for a tropical trip. This two pack is the perfect size to toss in a beach bag or a backpack for day trips. The Sunscreen Butter is the ultimate protection during surfing or intense water activities, but a little goes a long way!

2. Hats for Running & the Beach

But sun protection doesn’t end with sunscreen. An essential part of my sun protection strategy involves making my own shade, so I pack several hats: one to run in, and two to wear on the beach or by the pool. My Vitamin A Swim wide brim hat is an older style, but I’d recommend this recycled straw bucket hat

3. Linen Shirt for Chic, Lightweight Sun Protection

Lastly, I swear by the Vitamin A Playa Linen Boyfriend Shirt. It’s lightweight, comfy, and breezy in the tropical heat while also offering sun protection. Toss it on as a coverup for the pool bar or lunch. You can also wear it at home as a summer layer for running errands or just going for a walk! Buying pieces you’ll use outside of vacations is more sustainable for the planet, and your wallet.

Tropical Packing List: Sustainable Swimwear

A tropical vacation needs swimsuits, of course! This is an item where you definitely want to avoid fast fashion, and opt for a sustainably-made suit that will last for years–and not just one trip.

4. Sustainable Swimwear

Vitamin A makes my favorite sustainable swimwear. Their pieces are high quality, flattering, and have lasted me for years. If you’ve been wanting to try them, I highly recommend the California High Leg Bottom and the Gia Triangle Top. I’ll be taking this exact ‘kini with me; the Aloe Bloom print just screams “Hawaii!”

Tropical Packing List: Carryon

Travel can be hectic and stressful, especially during the holidays. To make the process as effortless and enjoyable as possible, here’s how I pack my carryon bag.

5. Stainless Steel Water Bottles

For every flight, I take at least one 20 oz stainless steel water bottle for myself. If the flight is 4 hours or longer, I also take a 40 oz S’well bottle. Staying hydrated helps me feel better on long flights! S’well bottles are my favorite. They’re durable and stylish, come in lots of color and prints, and of course they’re more sustainable than plastic!

6. Headphones

Block out the noise and relax with a pair of good noise-canceling headphones. I prefer over-the-ear styles, and have been wanting to upgrade my Beats Studio Pro Headphones to the AirPod Max

7. iPad or MacBook

Whether you prefer to watch movies or get a little work done on the flight, I highly recommend a tablet or laptop for long trips. For some things, a bigger screen and keyboard is so much easier. Some versions of the iPad are even on sale on Amazon, up to 22% off right now!

Tropical Packing List: Effortless Vacation Style

8. Beachy Hair Essentials

On vacation I tend to wash my hair more than at home, since I’m usually swimming every day! To keep my hair hydrated, I pack my favorite hair products, which can be hard to find on location. While you can use hotel sizes, bringing your own reduces single-use plastic and ensures you’ll have the ingredients you want, and none of the fragrances or ingredients that you don’t. I just bought the Shampoo and Conditioner from Necessaire and love them.

9. Relaxed but Stylish Vacation Dresses

On vacation, I gravitate toward dresses more than at home because they’re so easy to slip on and get ready. I’m taking this L*Space favorite on our trip and can’t wait to wear it!

The Strapless West Dress from Vitamin A would be another great vacation option!

Price: $155.00

10. Effortless Vacation Makeup

“Effortless” is the theme, here. I almost never wear makeup at home, so I don’t wear much on vacation, either. For fresh skin and easy makeup, I’ll be taking these products with me.

Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint is a lightweight, minimal coverage tinted SPF that’s perfect for vacation. It’s my go-to for my no-makeup makeup routine.

I also love Kosas Wet Lip Oil for an easy gloss with some color. I like their shade “Dip.”

Add on some Merit mascara and voila, vacation makeup, done. Or skip the mascara and accent your eyes by using some clear brow gel on your eyebrows. This one from Milk is my favorite.

I hope that adding these essentials to your next tropical packing list helps to make your next vacation a little more effortless.

my philosophy on sustainability in swimwear

One of the biggest ways we can support social and environmental justice is by ensuring our purchases reflect our values. My philosophy is to apply the Essentialist principle “Less, but Better.” Buy less, but buy betterVitamin A is a lot like Patagonia: your pieces will last forever, and you can rest easy knowing they’ve been made responsibly.

Now back to the bikinis.

Dive into the Best Snorkeling Sites on Maui

Maui, Hawaii, "The valley isle"

When I travel, island adventures are at the top of my list. One of my favorite ocean activities is snorkeling (and free diving!). I’ve been fortunate to travel to islands with some of the best snorkeling in the world, and I want to share them with you. Today’s post is all about the best snorkeling sites on Maui, and what you can do to protect these stunning ecosystems.

 Let’s dive in.

Lana'i, as viewed from Kā‘anapali, Maui

MAUI NUI

Known as “The Valley Isle,” and the second largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, Maui is a popular destination for sun-seekers and honeymooners, and it’s not hard to see why. With warm sun, cool breezes, and stunning ocean blues, this Hawaiian island is nothing short of enchanting. “Maui Nui,” or “Greater Maui,” actually refers to four islands that were once joined over a million years ago. These are Maui, Moloka’i, Lana’i, and Kaho’olawe. Formed from seven shield volcanoes, as sea levels rose, spaces between these volcanoes flooded to form the distinct islands we see today. Each of these islands is unique: Lana’i is known for its exclusive luxury, Maui for its wide variety of tourist attractions and gorgeous resorts, and Moloka’i for having the highest sea cliffs in the world. Kaho’olawe, the smallest of the four, is used only for native Hawaiian cultural purposes today. When staying on Maui, you can access Lana’i and Moloka’i through helicopter tours and even some snorkeling tours. The snorkeling sites below are all accessed from the island of Maui.

Black Rock as seen from Kā‘anapali Beach

Pu’u keka’a (BLACK ROCK)

No need to charter a tour; to snorkel Maui’s Pu’u Keka’a, also known as Black Rock, you can wade into the water from Kā‘anapali Beach. All you need is your snorkel gear, but beware of strong currents. Wear a life vest for safety, swim with a buddy, and exit the water before you start to feel tired. The ocean currents can be strong and unpredictable, pushing you into the sharp rocks, or pulling you out to sea. If you aren’t a strong swimmer, you may want to consider enjoying Black Rock from the golden sand beach. Here you can witness many people jumping from the rocks into the ocean. This is in tribute to the ancient Hawaiian practice of cliff diving. Pu’u Keka’a is believed to be a jumping off point where the souls of the dead enter the afterlife. Again use caution; cliff diving can be extremely dangerous. With its proximity to the many resorts in Ka’anapali, Black Rock is an iconic spot and one of the best snorkeling sites on Maui. It’s a must for your next trip!
Approaching Molokini Crater by Boat
Exploring the Reef Inside Molokini Crater

molokini crater

Perhaps even more iconic is Molokini Crater. It’s actually not a crater, but a crescent atoll, the remnants of lava-buildup from underwater volcanic eruptions that have eroded to form a ring-shaped island. Take a chartered snorkeling tour and enjoy the catamaran ride out into the ocean, watching as Molokini grows larger, looming out of the blue Pacific Ocean. We’ve toured with Sail Trilogy twice and loved both experiences from start to finish! The inside reef boasts spectacularly clear water for snorkeling, while the backside drops down to nearly 360 feet,  offering wall and drift dives for SCUBA divers. Hop off the boat and into the salty, chilly, clear blue waters, where you’ll see an abundance of fish and coral. Opt for an early morning tour to avoid some crowds.

honolua bay

Meaning “two bays,” Honolua Bay is a beautiful snorkeling destination in the summer, and a big wave surfing site in the winter. Its beautiful coral formations and abundance of fish make it an exciting destination, and one of the best snorkeling sites on Maui. It’s also great for free diving! Dive deep to peek under the coral shelves and you might spot turtles, eels, and crabs, and you’re sure to spot colorful fish. The Hawaiian sun may be hot, but the Pacific Ocean is still cool. On future free dives, I’ll be wearing a shortie spring wetsuit so I can explore longer before feeling cold. But if you know me, you know I’m cold everywhere. Most snorkelers wear bikinis or board shorts, with some wearing long-sleeve UPF shirts.
Mokulei'a Bay above the surface. Peep the partial Hawaiian rainbow!
Below the surface, a Honu swims peacefully.

mokulei’a bay/slaughterhouse

Adjacent to Honolulu is Mokulei’a Bay, another spectacular site for snorkeling. Our catamaran took us to each site, one after the other, which is a great way to see both bays without attempting to climb down onto a rocky beach or swimming from one to the other (running the risk of exhaustion from strong ocean currents). You just might get lucky and see some locals, like these Honu (Sea Turtles). At one point, I saw 3 turtles in close proximity to the coral shelf, eating and swimming. They are truly peaceful to watch! Remember to respect the wildlife and their home. Give them space, don’t touch them, and don’t take any coral, shells, rocks, etc. with you.

REEF SAFETY

Reef-safe Sunscreen

It’s no secret that traditional, chemical-based sunscreens seriously damage coral reefs. Many protected marine sanctuaries and some states like Hawaii have banned ingredients like oxtinoxate and oxybenzone. To make sure you’re using a reef-safe sunscreen that’s also effective, check out my blog post on Clean Sunscreen here.  My favorite sport sunscreen is All Good Mineral Sport Sunscreen, which is a great option for face and body. It blends in easily and stays put. For water sports like snorkeling, I use All Good Sunscreen Butter on my face. It has SPF 50+ for extra coverage. Warm some in your hand before applying, and a little goes a long way. Remember that zinc sunscreen will “melt” in after applying for a more even look. I’ve worn All Good Sunscreen for snorkeling, running, surfing, you name it. Like any sunscreen, make sure you reapply per the instructions, which for this formula is every 80 minutes and after swimming or toweling off.

take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints

To protect these beautiful ecosystems, it’s so important that you follow all crew member and posted instructions. The guideline “take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints” sums it up best. Don’t touch the coral reefs or other sea life, don’t take anything from reef back with you, and be sure not to leave any trash or debris. Be extra careful when swimming close to shallow reefs; your flippers can easily brush into and damage the fragile reef. Coral reefs grow extremely slowly, so taking or bumping into a small section can turn the clock back on decades of growth. To preserve these stunning environments for future generations to enjoy, respect and protect the reefs!
