Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. From perfect October weather, to everything pumpkin, to classics like Hocus Pocus and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, there’s so much to love. In the spirit of the holiday, today’s post is no tricks, all treats: 5 Healthier Halloween Treats, to be precise. Dive in!
Needed is one of my favorite supplement brands because of their high-quality ingredients, the purity of their ingredients, and their commitment to sustainability. I’ve been taking Needed Prenatal Collagen Protein Powder for years because it’s the cleanest I’ve found anywhere. The only ingredient is collagen, and it’s Clean Label Project certified for purity and pesticide-free.

“Healthy” is in quotes because it’s still candy, after all. But I love love love Unreal candies. The Dark Chocolate Coconut Bars are my favorite. Gluten free, lower sugar, fair trade, the list goes on and on. Most candies are really full of junk these days, but Unreal bars aren’t! They’re the perfect option for a healthier Halloween treat. If you’re a Reese’s fan, try their Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups. You can purchase these on Amazon or from Whole Foods.
No, you can’t eat this one, but an escapist novel is still a treat! This fun novel took me a few tries to get into, but now I’m hooked. Set in 1940’s New York amidst the glamour of broadway, I had high hopes for loving this one. I’m about halfway through, and already wanting to see a Broadway show. Pick up City of Girls from Amazon or your local bookstore.
This Skratch Apple Cider flavor is my favorite, and it’s on sale on Amazon right now. I’m mixing it into water after workouts, or adding a half scoop to hot lemon water for a detoxifying Fall drink with an electrolyte boost. Just don’t overdo it– it has sugar to help with the absorption of electrolytes!
Hope your Halloween is sweet!

June marked my two year anniversary with my Oura Ring! The Oura Ring is hands down my favorite wearable, and the only one I use daily. In my Oura Ring review, I walk through some of my favorite features that far outweigh the cost of an Oura Ring.
I love tracking my health data. But more data is only valuable if you’re collecting the right data, and if you know how to use it. The Oura Ring gives you the right data, along with insights and actions to take.
Ranging from $299 to $499 in price, it’s not cheap but it’s on par with other wearables on the market. (It’s actually 20% off on Prime Day right now, for some models/colors). I wanted to write this Oura Ring review to give an overview of the Oura Ring, and share how I get the most out of mine: using it for better sleep, stress management and recovery, and even for birth control along with Natural Cycles.
TLDR: With the least expensive model at $299, (less than the cost of one specialist visit) you can have a veritable sleep lab at your fingertips. However, the Oura Ring can’t replace a running watch like a Garmin (it doesn’t have buttons or a screen).
Read on for the features that might just make you “put a ring on it” with the Oura Ring. 😉
A key philosophy of mine is that the “best,” (most accurate, most sustainable, whatever) product in the world is just about useless if you won’t actually use it. For a wearable like the Oura Ring, this means you actually have to want to wear it to get the most out of it! So I’m starting my Oura Ring review with aesthetics and comfort in mind.
I really like the aesthetics of the Oura Ring, and I frequently get compliments on it. It outshines other wearables by looking like jewelry, instead of a fitness tracker. It looks like a trendy, gold statement ring.
But at 7.9mm wide and 2.88mm thick, it’s quite large, especially if you have slim fingers like mine. I wear my Oura Ring on the middle finger of my right hand, and if I wear rings on the two adjacent fingers, it rubs into them. So pick a finger that’s not directly adjacent to a ring you wear regularly, such as a wedding band. Unfortunately, the Oura Ring 4 that just debuted is the same overall form factor. Its main differences are a fully titanium construction, recessed sensors, a slightly longer battery life (about a day), advanced signal processing, and a wider size range. Unless these are important features to you, you could probably snag the older version of the Oura Ring for 20% off on Prime Day and be totally happy! I plan to keep mine!
The Oura Ring needs a snug fit so its sensors can take accurate readings. Since my knuckles are larger than the base of each finger, this makes sizing difficult. The Oura Ring is too tight to take off without using soap and water to loosen it. It also fits on just one of my fingers, so I’m limited on where I wear it. Consider which finger you want to wear your ring on, and take advantage of Oura’s sizing kit before purchasing!
That said, I wear my Oura Ring 24/7. It’s comfortable enough to sleep, swim, shower, do yoga, and lift weights in. But a thinner, narrower ring design would go a long way towards improving this ring, in my opinion!
The Oura Ring tracks a spectacular amount of data. Fortunately, the app layout makes this data easy to understand at a glance, and three daily scores give you an overview, without the overwhelm. Yes, there’s an app, and it does cost extra, but only $5.99 per month. At less than the price of one nonfat decaf pumpkin spice latte per month (hey, it’s October), it’s well worth it.
I recommend wearing the Oura Ring 24/7, at least at first, to get the most out of it. Check the app right when you wake up, and you’ll see three important scores on your Home Screen: Readiness, Sleep, and Activity.
Readiness, Sleep, and Activity Scores give you an at-a-glance view of your Oura Ring data, and can be used to guide your day. This is my Oura Ring data from a random day in July. The high Readiness, Sleep, and Activity scores signaled that my body was well-recovered, and it could be a good day to challenge myself with a more intense workout. However, it’s important to trust how you feel, more than any app. If you don’t feel great, don’t push yourself just because the app says so. Sometimes my Oura Ring fails to detect minor illnesses and malaise. A triple crown day might not feel like it, so listen to your body above all else.
Also on the Home tab is a snapshot of your Daytime Stress and Resilience, both relatively newer features that I really love! I was surprised to learn that days I thought were low-stress were actually stressful based on my physiological response. I use the Daytime Stress feature to check myself, remind myself to relax and to take breaks!
Closely related, the Resilience score assesses how well you recover from stress, both during the day and with restorative sleep at night. During the weeks before my wedding, I really made an effort to build up my Resilience. This gave me a great buffer when last minute plans and preparation inevitably got stressful. And it left me with enough energy to have fun on our destination wedding weekend, without getting sick! Shown below is the automatic workout detection from my wedding day. The late night dancing may have impacted my Readiness score, but I had a blast and didn’t get sick!
Oura Ring will also show your Daytime Stress in realtime, throughout the day. Open your app and you’ll see a screen like this one, showing your recent stress level. Check this during the day and reflect upon what might have caused periods of stress, or relaxation.
Stress peaks and valleys are normal in life, and the Oura Ring can help you plan for stress, and recover from it.
Now choose your adventure: Scroll down for a deeper dive into the data behind these scores, or continue reading here for Cycle Insights and how to use your Oura Ring as birth control.
My Oura Ring review wouldn’t be complete without my favorite feature: birth control.
The Oura Ring integration with Natural Cycles was a long-awaited feature that makes my life so much easier. The Oura Ring uses your temperature to predict your period, and Natural Cycles uses this same data to predict your ovulation day. Knowing this information allows the app to predict your fertile days, which you can use to plan or prevent a pregnancy. See my Natural Cycles blog post for more details!
Even without the Natural Cycles app (which is a separate subscription), you can take advantage of Oura’s “Cycle Insights.” Over time, Oura will evaluate your cycle length, period length, and cycle variability, and tell you whether it’s regular or irregular. Since variations between cycles are common and likely not a cause for concern, having this data over time can help identify trends that might need to be addressed with a healthcare provider.
Cycle length, variability, and the lengths of the follicular and luteal phases all provide clues to your fertility and overall wellbeing. For example, a luteal phase (the time between ovulation and the start of your period) that’s shorter than 14 days can indicate a progesterone issue. This can lead to difficulty in getting pregnant. Alternately, a long follicular phase (the time between your period start and your ovulation day), can indicate that your body is having issues releasing an egg (also a barrier to pregnancy). A cycle longer than 35 days, or with spotting in between cycles could indicate other health issues.
It’s important to monitor your cycle and reach out to your health care provider with concerns, especially if you have mid-cycle bleeding, pelvic pain, or painful periods. Quantifying your cycle duration and variability can help you decode your fertility to understand what is happening inside your body. Having regular periods and ovulations confirmed by temperature spikes is good reassurance that your body is likely doing what it needs to each month. The Oura Ring will track all this for you.
If you’ve read this far into my Oura Ring review, you must like health data, let’s be friends. 🙂 Earlier we discussed the 3 daily scores from Oura Ring: Readiness, Sleep, and Activity. Scores are out of 100, and scores over 85 earn “crowns” for the day. (Add the Oura widgets to your iPhone Lock Screen and see these at-a-glance during the day).
These scores are derived from the many other data points that the ring collects, such as Heart Rate, HRV, SPO2, Body Temperature, Sleep Duration, Sleep Timing, Training Volume, and on and on. Venture off of the Home tab and onto the Readiness, Sleep, Activity, and Resilience tabs to learn more.
Improving our sleep is a goal for many of us. This was the main feature that drove me to buy an Oura Ring — it provides the accuracy of a sleep lab at your fingertips.
Navigate to the Sleep tab and you’ll see your Sleep score and other metrics at a glance: Total sleep, Time in bed, Sleep efficiency. You’ll also see a graph of your sleep for the night, depicting your time spent in each stage of sleep: REM, Light, and Deep. You’ll also see the metrics that comprise your Sleep Score. Metrics that are not optimized will be labeled as “Fair” or “Pay Attention,” and colored in light orange or red instead of blue, as seen below. Since the “Timing” metric is orange and labeled “Fair,” you can see that I went to bed too late this night, with respect to my Chronotype (another characteristic that Oura Ring uses to help you optimize sleep!).
Lastly, HRV (Heart Rate Variability) and Heart Rate (HR) are shown, as these metrics indicate how well you have recovered from the previous day, and can indicate whether something is straining your body. HRV and HR are metrics that can be highly individual, and can vary depending upon your sex, age, and activity levels. They can even change during the course of the menstrual cycle.
If you plan to use your Oura Ring as your primary fitness tracker, HR and HRV are likely two metrics you already expect to see. Oura takes these a step further by also evaluating Body temperature, Respiratory rate (SPO2), and HRV balance, a comparison of your recent HRV trend over the past 2 weeks to your 3-month average.
Did you know that 95% of moms are nutrient deficient? Before, during, and after pregnancy are very demanding times on the body. After all, you’re growing and sustaining another human! Unfortunately, the combination of modern diet and depleted soil makes it nearly impossible to get all your nutrients from diet alone, and most prenatal vitamins just don’t cut it. Needed Prenatal Collagen Protein can help.
Needed offers products for all perinatal stages, including TTC, pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond. They’re one of my favorite supplement brands because of their high-quality ingredients, the purity of their ingredients, and their commitment to sustainability. I’ve been taking their Needed Prenatal Collagen Protein Powder for years because it’s the cleanest I’ve found anywhere. And when they introduced Needed Academy, I jumped at the chance to talk about Needed products and get exclusive discounts for you!
Needed offers bundles for different stages and areas of support, depending on your needs. You can save time and money by simplifying with a product plan that’s tailored to your stage, such as the Complete Plan with a Prenatal Multi, Collagen, Omega-3, and Pre/Probiotics, the Fertility Support Plan for Two (both male and female support!), or the Gut Health Plan.

Now let’s review Needed’s Prenatal Collagen Protein Powder.
Check out my other reviews for Needed products, coming soon on the blog!
When pregnant, the demands of a growing baby and the changes in the woman’s body to support this require 80 to 100 grams of protein daily. That’s a lot of protein! Getting that amount of protein in a day can be difficult. Instead of reaching for quick options like processed meats or protein bars to bridge the gap, instead look for a high-quality collagen supplement. Collagen provides unique amino acids that are needed in higher amounts during pregnancy. Bonus: it’s known for supporting healthy hair and glowing skin!
Not all collagen protein powders are equal. In fact, it’s important to be extra careful about what supplements you take, whether pregnant or not, because supplements are not FDA-regulated. This means that ingredients labels are often inaccurate, and the products often contain higher levels of heavy metals and other contaminants. Protein powders in particular are notorious for their high lead content. You don’t have to worry about this with Needed, which is a huge reason I recommend them. Needed uses third-party testing on every batch of their collagen protein. They earned a Clean Label Project Purity Award and are certified pesticide free. Clean Label Project is a great, free resource where you can check the accuracy and purity of certain product labels! Check them out.
In addition, Needed Prenatal Collagen Protein is just that — there are no added ingredients! Many other proteins on the market come with added flavors, or other fillers. Last but not least, Needed Prenatal Collagen Protein Powder is grass-fed and sustainably sourced. The collagen is ethically sourced from the hides of grass-fed, pasture-raised, hormone-free bovines. This is some seriously clean collagen!
So now you know that Needed Prenatal Collagen Protein is a grass-fed, third-party tested, no-added-ingredients way to get the extra protein you need for a supported pregnancy. But what does it taste like?
One of my philosophies is that the “best” product in the world is not worth too much if you won’t actually use it. For sunscreen, this means it needs to feel good and work well under makeup (see this article with my favorites!). For collagen protein, this means it needs to mix well and you need to actually want to eat it! Needed Prenatal Collagen Protein Powder is unflavored, meaning you can dissolve it into just about whatever you want. Many women like to mix it into their coffee for a protein-fueled start to their day. Another option is to mix it into a bowl of oatmeal for some morning power oats. My favorite way to take Needed Collagen Protein is to mix it into a green smoothie for breakfast! Here’s my recipe for a protein-packed, low-sugar breakfast. My husband drinks it, too, so this recipe is for two!

Today I’m writing all about one of my favorite fertility tracking apps: Natural Cycles!
If you’re a woman, chances are you’ve probably tracked your period with an app at some point. But what was once a glorified digital calendar with a simple average cycle length calculation, is now an advanced wearable with algorithms that can do so much more. Fertility tracking apps are an important piece of the puzzle when it comes to understanding your own fertility, and taking charge of your health journey as a woman. My favorite fertility tracking apps are Natural Cycles, Oura, and Proov, and I’ll walk through how to use each of them during upcoming blog posts!

5 years ago, I started to question my use of hormonal birth control. I wondered what the side effects could be on my fertility, and my body in general, in a way I didn’t consider before. I began looking for non-hormonal methods that were more effective than calendar-based methods, and found Natural Cycles. Natural Cycles is not just a fertility tracking app. It’s the first FDA cleared medical device for birth control. I talked to my OB/GYN, stopped hormonal birth control, started Natural Cycles to prevent pregnancy, and I’ve never looked back. Natural Cycles is as effective as hormonal birth control pills with typical use, which includes any mistakes made by the app or by the person using it. You can also use Natural Cycles to plan for a pregnancy, monitor a pregnancy, and track recovery from a pregnancy using their Postpartum mode.
Natural Cycles works by tracking your basal body temperature (BBT), which is your body’s lowest resting temperature, as it changes during your cycle. After ovulation, progesterone rises, and so does your BBT. An egg can survive for about 24 hours after ovulation, and sperm can survive for up to 5 days in the female body, so about 6 days each cycle could result in pregnancy. By tracking your BBT, the app can identify these fertile days, (and non-fertile days after your ovulation).
If you just want to know which days to use protection to prevent pregnancy, don’t worry: the Natural Cycles app makes it easy. The app’s Home Screen shows either a “red” day where you could be fertile, or a “green” day where you aren’t. No algorithm is perfect, but recall that the app is as effective as hormonal birth control with typical use (93%), so the risk of an unplanned pregnancy is the same.
If you’re looking to plan a pregnancy, you’ll use the app the same way, but your target days to use protection or abstain now become your target days to try to conceive (TTC). The app also prompts you to take LH (Luteinizing Hormone) tests at relevant points in your cycle, to better predict your ovulation day. LH rises and peaks 24-48 hours before ovulation, so simple morning urine tests can detect this rise and give you a closer idea of when you may ovulate. My favorite LH test is from Proov— keep an eye out for my post about Proov for my Women’s Health Month series!
What makes Natural Cycles such a great fertility tracking app is its integrations with the Oura Ring and Apple Watch. Natural Cycles uses the temperature data for your device as part of its algorithm to predict your fertility. All you need to do is keep your device charged, wear it nightly, and check your Natural Cycles app daily. I was thrilled when this integration was announced, because I was already using each app separately! It’s the simplest hormone-free birth control solution, while providing the added bonus of world-class sleep lab data, HR, HRV, and SPO2 monitoring from the Oura Ring for total-body health. This is how I use Natural Cycles, and it’s been such a game-changer.
Buying an Oura Ring along with a Natural Cycles subscription comes with a device and subscription discount. If you don’t want an Oura Ring or Apple Watch, you can always opt for using the NC thermometer to take your temperature manually each morning, included for free with the annual plan.
Thanks to a federal directive in 2022, health insurance companies are now required to cover other methods of birth control, which includes Natural Cycles as an out-of-network provider. You’ll pay for a subscription out of pocket, then submit your receipt, your Rx from your doctor, and an out-of-network claim form to your insurance for reimbursement. This process can take a while, but Natural Cycles provides resources such as a template to use with your doctor requesting a prescription for Natural Cycles, and instructions and links to your insurance company’s forms. Their customer service is also there to help if you need to appeal your insurance claim. Hopefully this process will be easier in the future, as insurance companies adjust to the directive.
Switching birth control methods can be a scary decision. Make sure you talk with your doctor before stopping any medications. Remind yourself of the efficacy of each method you’re considering. If you can, plan your switch for a time that’s convenient to you. It might make sense to switch after a big event such as a vacation, wedding, big work project or move, since your body will likely need some time to adjust to the change in hormones. If your first period off of hormonal birth control is different or painful, don’t worry too much, you’ll adjust! (If you need period products again, head to my post about menstrual cups and other sustainable period products!) Good luck making the switch! I’m rooting for you.

Snail mucin may be trending, but you won’t find it on my list. Check out these other beauty, health & wellness gifts for your Black Friday shopping. Dive in!
Herbivore is one of my favorite beauty brands, and I just added their limited edition Hot Coco Coconut Oil Body Scrub Mini to my cart. This would make a great stocking stuffer and it’s on Black Friday sale for up to 20% off.
This dry brush from Goop is a great way to add relaxation and exfoliation into your daily ritual. Gift it to yourself or anyone on your list for a Goop-approved health & wellness gift.
I swapped out my foam roller for a cork roller months ago, and I love that it’s natural and sustainable. Here’s a similar one on Amazon, currently on sale with a $10 coupon.
You can’t have a health & wellness gift guide without some wearable tech! My Garmin Watch and Oura Ring are the two pieces of tech I wear 24/7, and they definitely help me improve upon my fitness and performance. The Oura Ring and a smart watch like the Garmin Forerunner should be top of your list for health & wellness gifts this year. Read on to learn why!
As a runner, a Garmin GPS Watch has been a staple for me for years. The Forerunner series is specifically tailored to runners, as the name suggests. It’s also a multipart watch, and can be used in GPS mode with other sports like running and swimming. This makes it a good entry point for anyone wanting to dabble in triathlons!
My current Garmin watch is the Forerunner 245 Music, and it’s currently on sale as a Black Friday Deal for up to 43% off! My version is a 245S where the “S” means it’s a smaller form factor. Since I have small wrists, this fits better on me. If you want a Small and a sale, the slightly newer version (255S) is on sale for up to 25% off!
The music feature means you can load music on the watch itself and connect it to your headphones, without carrying your phone around the gym or on a run. (I don’t run with music, read my running coaching blog to learn why!).
The other wearable in those pictures above: my Oura Ring! It’s my favorite piece of health tech and I wear it 24/7. It monitors HR, HRV, temperature (pair it with Natural Cycles!), and SPO2 to bring you insights into your sleep and total body wellness. My referral link will get you $40 off the Oura Ring, and many styles are already on sale for Black Friday. If you buy just one thing for yourself this year, make it this!
